When weddings are not celebrated in 2025: Christian rules and recommendations

Organizing a wedding involves taking into account many details, including choosing the date. In Romanian tradition there are some days of the year in which weddings are not celebrated, both for religious reasons and out of respect for ancient customs. The year 2025 is no exception, bringing with it a series of days in which the Orthodox Church prohibits the commission of religious weddings. Here are the days and periods of the year considered unfavorable for marriage, but also what alternatives you have if you organize the most important party of your life!

The importance of the Orthodox calendar in setting the wedding date

The Orthodox calendar plays an essential role in choosing the wedding date, especially for those who want to respect ancient traditions. Within this calendar there are some holidays in which tradition recommends not organizing festive events, including weddings. These usually include fasting periods, great weeks and some important religious holidays.

Post-Orthodox are times when believers are encouraged to abstain from certain worldly activities, which contravene prayer and moderation. Therefore, in 2025, the fasting periods in which it is not recommended to organize weddings are: the Christmas station (November 15-December 24), Great Lent (from the Monday after the Sunday of dried meat and up to and including Saturday), the fast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (from the Monday after Sunday, to Sunday, to Sunday, to Sunday and to Sunday,

At the same time, in the Orthodox calendar, there are some days called royal holidays, which are usually legal days off and are considered inappropriate for organizing the wedding. Some of these include: the baptism of the Lord (January 6), the Ascension of the Lord (40 days after Easter), the descent of the Holy Spirit (50 days after Easter), and the birth of the Lord (December 25).

When will there be no weddings in 2025?

As for the 2025 Talendary, there are some days that couples should avoid when planning their wedding. According to the Orthodox calendar and the popular Almanah, the days when weddings are prohibited in 2025 include, on the one hand, post periods in the year, such as:

  • Wednesday and Friday;
  • The post of Holy Easter (24 February – 27 April);
  • The post of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (16-28 June);
  • The pole of the Assumption of the Virgin (31 July – 14 August);
  • The post of the Birth of the Lord (November 15 – December 24);
  • from Christmas to San Ione (25 December – 7 January).

Furthermore, weddings are not celebrated in 2025 nor in the following respectively on the eve and days of royal holidays:

  • February 1-2 – welcome the Lord;
  • 28-29 May – Santa Muceniță Teodosia;
  • 7-9 June-Eve, first and second day of Pentecost;
  • August 15 – Assumption of the Virgin Mary;
  • 13-14 September: vigil and elevation of the Holy Cross.

To avoid the bad days when you set the wedding date, here are some useful tips:

1. Learn about superstitions and traditions related to weddings in your culture.
2. Carefully check the Orthodox calendar and popular almanah to identify days considered bad.
3. Discuss with your partner and families the importance they place on these traditions and superstitions.
4. Try to find a balance between respecting traditions and choosing something that is convenient for you and your guests.

In the history of humanity, marriage has always been an event of extraordinary importance, surrounded by a multitude of traditions, customs and superstitions. In this context, the evolution of wedding traditions has been influenced by cultural, religious, social progress, but also by technological progress. In 2025, these traditions should be combined with modern elements, adapted to the alert pace and specific needs of the 21st century. For example, more and more couples have included technological elements in their events, such as live broadcasts for those who couldn’t physically attend or choosing digital wedding invitations.

Beyond these trends, the superstitions specific to the year 2025 are largely related to the astral events that will take place this year. For example, there is a belief that odd years are unfavorable for marriages, but this may vary depending on the specific culture of each loving couple. Furthermore, another aspect that can influence the choice of wedding date in 2025 is the presence of three solar eclipses, events considered by some to be bad signs.
