Marriage in Romanian culture is more than just a celebration of the union of two lovers; It is a mosaic of traditions, customs and superstitions, transmitted from generation to generation. Imagine a scene where modernity dances in harmony with the echoes of centuries-old traditions: this is the essence of a contemporary Romanian wedding. In these special events, ancient wisdom and habits with little creativity find their place alongside modern trends, creating a fresh and captivating perspective on love celebrations. Every aspect of the modern Romanian wedding is a statement of respect for the past, present and future. This blend of old and new creates a bridge between generations and how people have been celebrated from ancient times to the present day.
Of course there are marriages that don’t want them because they consider them outdated habits and I simply don’t believe it. It is part of this tradition, which is said to bring good luck and prosperity, but there are enough of them that are still preserved.
8 Romanian wedding traditions and customs and their meaning
1. Question from the bride
One of the first, most exciting and significant customs related to marriage begins with the request for marriage, that is, the bride’s question. This ceremonial moment takes place before the wedding and represents the formal act with which the groom, accompanied by family and friends, goes to the bride’s parents’ house to officially ask for her hand. Surrounded by an air of solemnity and joy, this ritual symbolizes not only the union of two hearts, but also of two families. With symbolic gifts, such as flowers, wine and sometimes sweets or bread, the groom expresses his sincere intentions and respect for the bride’s family. The moment is often accompanied by emotional words, tears of joy and smiles, which mark the beginning of a new chapter in the couple’s life. The petition is more than a formality; It is a tribute to family traditions, respect and values.
2. The placon
The plocon represents a gift or a series of gifts that brides traditionally offer to their godparents before the wedding. Nowadays, however, it can be given before the wedding, on the wedding day or even after, depending on the understanding that the noses have. It is a form of gratitude and respect for the godparents, which plays an essential role not only in guiding the couple in their new journey, but also in being a pillar of support and wisdom with spiritual and practical responsibilities in marriage.
The custom of plocon varies depending on the region and local customs, but essentially consists of the spouses offering symbolic gifts to the godparents. It is chosen based on the possibilities of each couple and, generally, is made up of things for the home (a set of crystal glasses, a set of personalized towels and bathrobes, maybe even an appliance).
This tradition is not just a simple exchange of gifts, but a mutual promise of support, respect and spiritual love, which unites two families in a unique and special way.
3. The groom’s barber
The tradition of shaving the groom is a wedding custom that symbolizes the maturation of the groom, the transformation of the flame into a man, and the acquisition of the responsibilities of an adult and a husband. After the wedding avenue has been opened by the knights of honor, they go with the lautas to the groom’s house. The groom’s shave is done by a barber or a person close to the groom, often the godfather or a good friend.
In some communities, this custom begins with a «false barber» – usually a friend of the groom – who jokes and tries to «shave» him in a faulty way, to the amusement of those present. This moment is full of laughter and jokes, bringing a cheerful atmosphere before the solemnity.
4. The bride’s kitchen
In essence, the tradition of «cooking» the bride involves dressing her in the wedding dress with the help of the godfather, mother or bridesmaids. The moment is often emotionally charged, and marks the girl’s final preparation in her parents’ home. In some regions, the tradition is preserved that the bride is dressed with a godfather, who helps her put on her wedding dress, veil and arrange her hairstyle and jewelry. This act symbolizes the blessing and support that the godfather offers to the bride in her new phase of life.
In addition to the physical aspect of clothing, there is also a spiritual and emotional element. During this ritual, traditional songs are sung and greetings are said, and in some areas various customs are practiced to bring luck and happiness into the marriage, such as placing a prosperity coin in the bride’s shoes.
5. The bride’s cake
The bride’s cake is, in fact, a special bread, often decorated with traditional motifs, which is baked before the wedding and plays an important role in the wedding ceremony. Traditionally, the cake is prepared by the women of the bride’s family or their mothers, in a process that involves prayers and songs, underlining the hope of fertility and abundance in the couple’s home.
This tradition takes place on the wedding day and in the bride’s house, when the groom goes to her, together with the other guests. The bride has to sit on a chair and at that time she will break the cake over her head. First he must cross himself three times, then he will break the cake into four pieces. First the brides will be served, after which the slices of cake will be distributed to the guests, this custom is a symbol of fertility and prosperity in the new life of the newlyweds.
6. The bride’s stole
The stolen bride tradition is one of the best known and loved customs in traditional Romanian weddings. This custom usually happens during the wedding party and is full of fun and suspense.
In essence, the bride’s stole presupposes that a group of guests, usually close friends of the bride or groom, will «steal» the bride at a time when the groom is not paying attention. The bride is taken to a secret location, often outside the party location, such as another bar or restaurant. The newlyweds will then have to find her and «pay» a ransom to recover their bride. Redemption can come in the form of money, drinks, promises of love, or even a performance of a song or dance.
The custom symbolizes the groom’s testing to see how much he loves and desires his bride and also his ability to cope in unexpected situations. Although it is a fun and playful scene, the moment often brings additional fun and dynamism to the wedding party.
7. Throwing the bouquet
The tradition of throwing the bouquet at weddings is a popular and meaningful custom, widespread in many cultures, including Romanian. This moment usually takes place during the wedding party and is one of the most anticipated events, especially by unmarried women present at the wedding.
According to tradition, the bride, turning her back to a group of unmarried women, throws the bouquet over her shoulders. It is believed that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to get married. This habit symbolizes the transfer of the bride’s luck and happiness to another person.
8. The bride’s veil
The tradition of changing the bride’s veil to a scarf (or sometimes to a scarf) is an ancient custom of Romanian weddings, symbolizing the passing of the bride in front of the married woman. This ritual usually takes place during the wedding party and constitutes an emotional and significant moment.
In this custom, after the bride and groom have danced and celebrated, the godfather, together with other married women, removes the bride’s veil and replaces it with a headscarf or scarf. The bride rejects her three times then the godfather puts his head on her and gives her some money, symbolizing that she has become a housewife and that she will have a prosperous and lucky marriage.
The veil is then placed by the bride in the hair of an unmarried girl, usually the girl who caught the wedding bouquet.
This tradition is a beautiful example of the way in which Romanian weddings combine festive moments with those full of deep meanings, linking the present to the traditions and values of the past.
Whether you choose to follow traditions to the letter, adapt them to your tastes, or create your own traditions, the most important thing is that your wedding is an authentic expression of love and connection between you.
Having the best memories with your loved ones is what really matters. Every laugh, every dance, every moment spent with family and friends will build a mosaic of memories that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
Ultimately, the success of a wedding is not measured by how well traditions are followed, but by how much joy and love they bring into the hearts of everyone present.
